Fine Art Degree at Kingston University 2002 - 2005

With paintings of flowers I aimed to question the inherent perception of beauty. It occurred to me that flowers   are not always as beautiful as they may initially seem. Closer observations can lead to recognition of more unattractive characteristics. The large scale is important to contrast a real flower which is small and easily overlooked, they can not be ignored and the unappealing aspects are easily noticed. I began by exaggerating unsightly features. Then as I studied the flowers, the fleshy petals, discoloration and veins led me to draw comparisons between floral and human beauty and ugliness. I started to afflict my flowers with human skin conditions, acne and varicose veins with duel outcome, contradiction of the beauty of the flower, whilst diminishing the repulsive skin conditions.
